THE STEEL MAGNOLIA GALA COMMEMORATES OUR FRIEND, CHAMPION, AND NAMESAKE
SENATOR WYNONA M. LIPMAN

wynonalipman

Wynona Lipman was a trailblazer for her generation. Breaking many racial barriers and fighting for the rights of children and women, she became the first African American Senator in the State of New Jersey in 1972. The “Steel Magnolia,” as she is often referred to for her tenacity and gentility, had a proven legislative track record in the State Senate with more than 145 laws introduced to prevent domestic violence, licensing of child care centers, sexual assault prevention programs at public schools and mentoring programs for at-risk youth.

Mrs. Lipman’s untimely death in 1999 left behind a legacy that many will not forget. Her commitment and passion for the community and the people of Newark, New Jersey will continue to live on, through Wynona’s House Child Advocacy Center and the many lives she impacted through education, advocacy and state representation.
